Reflection #5- Due Sunday 3/31 @ 10:00 pm

The following is your fifth reflection for the 3rd quarter. Please answer the question(s) to the best of your ability using FULL SENTENCES. Remember that this reflection is due no later than Sunday 3/31@ 10:00 pm. Use the handout I provided on day 1 of the class to ensure that your response will earn you full credit.

3rd Quarter Reflection # 5

There have been a lot of stories in recent years about universities being put on probation, or even being told that they have to forfeit already played games because their players had received money or gifts while attending that school.

Answer the following questions about this topic:

  1. Do you think college athletes should get paid (in money....not scholarship and education) for the sport that they play while in college? Why or Why not?
  2. Research a recent case (last 3 years) where a college had to forfeit games, was placed on probation, or lost scholarships for players taking some type of illegal gift or payment while still in college. Explain who was involved with the case and explain some of the details. Make sure to include whether or not you agree with the decision.

Remember that these are your opinions, they can't be completely wrong if you provide logical facts!

I think that college athletes should be able to be paid for playing a sport. Since a majority of the players on the team are most likely not going to make the pros, then they should be able to get paid for playing in college. In 1991, the Michigan basketball team or the fab 5 had to take down there final 4 bannners do to 4 of the players recieving money when they were younger. Basketball star Chris Webber was trialed for taking money from a man who he had to later pay back when he was in the big times. I dont this penalty should have happend, what is the worst a player can do with money. This can only buy them luxury, it has nothing to do with the game itself.

I do not think that College Athletes should be paid while playing in college, it would be unfair to other students whom represent their school and it will create more problem with young player receiving big amounts of money and they don't know how to deal with it.
During the season 2008-2009 some football players from the University of North Carolina accepted money. According to the NCAA, multiple student-athletes received impermissible benefits totaling more than $31,000 and six players competed while ineligible, in addition to other violations. Apparently NFL agents would have paid these players. The school has been placed on a three years probation and banned from the 2012 post-season. The school punished players by making them sit out. The school accepted these sanctions and now wants to "move forward".

In my own opinion, I do not think that college athletes should be paid in any circumstance. They have not made it to the big time yet so I don't think they should be treated as so. Changing gears, I know that former USC halfback, Reggie Bush has been stripped of his 2005 Heisman Trophy. He has been stripped of this because he allegedly excepted money and violated NCAA sanctions. I totally agree with the decision because as previously stated, college athletes haven't "made it" yet. So why treat them as if they had?

1. I think that college athletes should not get paid. If the team does will they should receive money off the cost of the school and get full scholarships. I think this because they are representing the school not themselves.
2. A recent case is Chris Webber received money from their coach Ed Martin. The men’s basketball program was punished for numerous rule NCAA rule violations.

I don't think players should get money. They should get scholarship money but only that. College players should player for the school and not the money. A recent case were the Tennessee football team assailant ant coach bribed some of his players. The kid who was a prospect was given money to the players when visiting the college. When this was found out by the ncaa the coach was suspened. When the ncaa found out more the coach was fired. The football team had a two year suspension from the ncaa. Ryan foley.

For them playing. They should play for the team and not the money. There was incident on the University of Tennessee football team. There was an assistant coach who paid a player money when visiting the campus. As soon as the NCAA found out he was suspended. As the NCAA found out more information they suspended the entire football program for two years. I do agree with the NCAA ruling.

College endorsements
In the NCAA, it is illegal for a player to receive money or gifts outside of a scholarship. If this happens, the university is fined, put on probation, have to miss games or lose scholarships. I think that this rule is not fair to the players for many reasons. Competing on a college team is hard work and takes time along with school so a player cannot get a job easily to make money. Also, having to complete 2 years of college before going to the pros prevents a player from receiving endorsements they could have if they were in the pros, making them lose out on money. I think players should not be able to get above a certain amount of money, or the university should not be punished as harshly. Recently, the Alabama football team was charged with paying players and changing their grades. The NCAA has not come to a punishment yet, but they will likely lose scholarships and miss games in the coming year. I think this punishment would be fair complying with the NCAA rules, especially because they not only paid players but they changed their grades.

In my opinion, i dont think that college students should get paid in money, only scholorships because if students got payed in money, then they have the money to spend on useless things. so by using scholorships, students have something to motivate them to keep themselves in the sport and school. one example of the outcome of illegally using money in college sports is sports agent Josh Luchs. Luchs admitted to paying money and providing other benefits to college athletes and he even got suspended for providing a $5,300 commission check that a player had paid to us to an attorney during a civil proceeding.

First, I believe that college athletes should not be paid money. Scholarships are enough incentive for college athletes. Teams would be able to buy their way into the NCAA tournament every year rather than building a team good enough to make it that far. A recent case of kids taking gifts from others is Reggie Bush in 2010. Him and his family received free airfare, limousine rides, cars and a home from agents wanting bush as a client. His team was stripped of its 2004 title win and he was stripped of his Heisman trophy that he obtained in 2005. I agree with the decision to take his Heisman, but to punish the whole team by removing their championship banner from them because of the actions of one kid seems a bit harsh.

I think that athletes should have the choice of being paid in money or in scholarship. Each athlete is old enough to decide what they want to do after college. If the chose to take the money they are certain on going into the NBA. However some college players who aren't good enough for the NBA or become injured will happily take the scholarship because it will secure a good future for them after college.

Personally, I believe that college athletes should not get paid. I enjoy NCAA sports much more than pro sports, due to the fact that the athletes in college play for the love of the game, and not for their next pay check. If college athletes got paid, I think that they would lose all their ambitions to make it to the pro-leagues. One case that a college football player was suspended due to accepting illegal benefits is Terrelle Pryor from Ohio State University. After accepting the improper benefits from a tattoo parlor, he was suspended 5 games. Then he decided to leave the Buckeyes and go to the NFL's supplemental draft.
