Reflection #7- Due Sunday 4/28 @ 10:00 pm

The following is your seventh reflection for the 3rd quarter. Please answer the question(s) to the best of your ability using FULL SENTENCES. Remember that this reflection is due no later than Sunday 4/28@ 10:00 pm. Use the handout I provided on day 1 of the class to ensure that your response will earn you full credit.

3rd Quarter Reflection # 7

The NFL, NHL, and NBA all have standard sizes for their playing surfaces so that the dimensions are the same no matter where you are playing in all of those sports. The following are the dimensions for each sport:
NFL Field= 120 yds by 53 yds
NHL Rink= 200 ft by 85 ft
NBA Court= 94 ft by 50 ft

The only one of the four major American sports that doesn't require a standard size is MLB. As you may know, each field has its own dimensions. For example, Yankee Stadium is 318 ft to right field while Fenway Park is only 310 ft to left field but they have the Green Monster standing tall. Some question whether or not being able to tailor your filed to your liking gives the home team an unfair advantage over opponents.

The question for this weeks blog is whether or not you believe MLB should do what the other major sports have done and standardize the size of each teams field. Please give your opinion on this topic and explain your answer fully.

Remember that these are your opinions, they can't be completely wrong if you provide logical facts!

I think the MLB shouldn't standardize the size of each teams field because it would cost money to do so plus I don't think it would make a big difference in the game, also knowing that every stadium is "special" and does not exactly look like every others is a good, it add a bigger challenge for the player and I'm sure the fans like to know that their team play in a stadium different than others.

I do not believe that the MLB should have a standard sized field for the teams to play on. I think that the different sized fields makes every stadium unique and more interesting to play at. Also, people think that having a standard sized field would take away from a home field advantage and make the game more fair, but all of the teams play equally at home and away, so it does not matter that much if the fields are a little bit different from each other. That is why MLB should not standardize their fields.

I personally don't think they should change a thing. The reason why is that some of these stadiums have been around for awhile so why change anything now. Plus if the MLB were to make all fields the same size then some teams may have to take out some seats. For the green monster what are they to do with that just take it down? Also I don't see how field size gives the away team an unfair advantage, I mean if a field is small its going to be the same distance for players to hit a Hr.

I don't think that MLB stadium should have standard sizes. First i think that if they should have done it a long time ago when the sport was just beginning. Plus is think it makes every baseball park unique. No NFL or NHL stadium has a green monster in it. Fans may like to go to the games because the fields are not all the same. Sometimes you here stories of people who go to all the baseball stadium because they are all unique. This is not like the other three sports. For example some stadiums have a swimming pool in it and a waterfall at centerfield. Lastly for the people who think it is unfair for players i say that everyone plays on the same field that game.

I personally think that the MLB should standardize the fields because by doing this, they remove the fact of people questioning whether or not there are any unfair advantages, so by doing this, the league will make the playing fields equal.

I think that the MLB should regulate the size of their fields. Since all the fields have different dimensions it gives the away team an unfair advantage since they are not used to the field. In any other sport the away team is already used to the field or court because they are regulated. However I think that the MLB is reluctant to changing this rule because the MLB is a very old league and has many old fashioned views about the game and wants to keep it the way it is.

I think that they should'nt standerize the MLB field. This has been a tradition since baseball started in the late 1800's. This is what makes the MLB so much more signifigant to the other sports. Both teams somewhat get an advantage because they get used to there own field and then play on another field. When you think of a football field you automatically say 100 yard and an NBA court has to be the same for the lack of points, but in MLB they can change it because it shows dominance in a player. If a person launched a homer over the Green Monster it shows that this guy has strength.

While the NBA, NFL and NHL all have standard dimensions for court/field size, the MLB does not for the stadiums. The size of the field varies, such as Yankee Stadiums 318 ft and Fenway Parks 310 ft to right field and other structures, such as the Green Monster which stands 37 ft tall in left field. I think that MLB fields should have regulated field sizes like all other pro sports to make it more fair. While everyone is playing on the same field and no one has a direct advantage, the home team will be more used to the changes and could play better. Differences could also throw players off in other ways such as mental thinking which could affect their playing. Overall, I think the MLB should regulate the field size.

I think that the MLB should not have standard field sizes because it gives each ball park a different feel and each one can be played differently. I also think that gives teams an ability to show off their field and how it is different from others. This also adds variety to the game.
